Notes from last night….

In general, bring out moving lines and back off if holding notes underneath those lines. Err on the side of tenuto for Price and the 2nd and 4th mvts of Still. These pieces, like most music, tell a story and we should be conversing, not talking over each other.

Brass - match bell heights. A couple people have their bell pointed right at the heads of those in front of them and it’s causing that sound to stick out of the texture. Don’t play to the ground, but maybe more stand height. We’ve got full sections now, so it won’t hurt our balance, only improve it.

Still
- 2nd mvt: think the opening of Rhapsody in Blue from Fantasia. Big dramatic sighs, slumping head down on hand.
- 4th mvt: Opening, Church organ, resolutely. Think resonance, in tune, listen closely! Rehearsal 42: Would like to get up to dotted quarter=82 bpm. Because we have to slow down to 72 bpm at Rehearsal 48. We’ll keep working on this.

Price
- If you have Staccatos under a slur marking, DO leave space between the notes, the slur is more of a phrase marking and would mean that your bow (your air) should continue in that direction. Again, more tenuto with weight.
- Conducting Meters: 4/4, Rehearsal 5: 2/2, Rehearsal 9: 4/4, Rehearsal 12: 2/2, Rehearsal 17: 4/4, Rehearsal 23: 2/2

Copland
- Lifts/Breath marks - think of the quarter just before as an 8th note legato followed by an 8th rest. That’s the space we want.
